William Mitchell College of Law Then and Now

St. Luke's Parochial School 1932

St. Luke’s Parochial School was located at 878-880 Portland Avenue from 1905 to 1951. After that Our Lady of Peace School set up shop and used this building until 1972. William Mitchell College didn’t get there until 1977. The address of the building has been changed to 875 Summit Avenue. William Mitchell had five predecessors. Only one was in St. Paul. The other four, organized between 1900 and 1919 were in Minneapolis. Accredited by the American Bar Association in 1938, by 1940 the Minneapolis law schools merged and became the Minneapolis-Minnesota College of Law. In 1956 the St. Paul College of Law joined the party and the new school was named for Justice William Mitchell of the Minnesota Supreme Court. Despite the school’s humble beginnings it has produced many fine attorneys, judges, business and civic leaders. Among the institutions luminous graduates are the 15th chief justice of the United States, Warren E. Burger ’31, and the first woman to serve on the Minnesota Supreme Court, Rosalie E. Wahl.
