Stone Church Condos Then and Now
495 Ashland Avenue was originally the site of Saint John the Evangelist Episcopal Church. Built in 1885 by Cass Gilbert, a fire destroyed the sanctuary. The church was rebuilt in 1908 by Thomas Holyoke. All that remains of Gilbert’s work is a guildhall on the north end of the building. The church has been used by a variety congregations including St. Paul Universalist, First Seventh Day Adventist and more recently the Contender for the Faith Church. During the Depression the building was home to a “Russian Theater.” It was converted to condominiums in 1981.
