Floating Above the Fogotten City

1905

Another view of Minneapolis at the turn of the century. I think I’ve spotted at least three buildings that are still standing. Yep! There’s the Lumber Exchange and beyond that the Wyman. The Andrus Building on Nicollet was only six years old when this photo was taken The dome in the center of the photo was built for use as a barn and to provide a permanent home for  an enormous panoramic painting. The Battle of Atlanta “Cyclorama” was completed in 1886 and  began touring the upper midwest in 1887. This huge painting was said to be the largest in the world measuring 50 feet high by 400 feet long.  After the spending decades on tour the paining  returned  home to historical park in Atlanta Georgia. The round building went on to serve as a Roller Rink and a couple furniture stores. The tallest building in the picture above is the New York Life Building. Built 10 floors above ground in 1888 it stood at the corner of 5th and 2nd Avenue until 1958.
