Stella’s Then and Now
For most of my life this old place on the south side of Girard at Lake Street was a dental school. The building was originally a theater. In fact the arch from the stage and a variety of brick window patch jobs that may have been dressing rooms or offices at one point were visible on the back of the building for many years. The structure, designed by architect Clifford T. McElroy, went up in 1914. The Calhoun Theatre opened in 1915 and closed in 1921. I’ve never been to Stella’s, but that roof-top patio looks like fun and with any luck I’ll make it over there next summer.
