Flour from the Falls
In the early 19th century mills began to appear along the Mississippi River near Saint Anthony Falls. Using water power provided by the falls and a variety of industrial technological advances Minneapolis became the flour milling capital of the world. The riverfront was lined with flour mills and gave birth to corporate giants General Mills and Pillsbury. Our Milling Industry produced so much flour, so efficiently that by the turn of the century a bag of flour from Minneapolis was cheaper than a bag of Turkish flour in the markets of Istanbul.
