Did you know the Minneapolis Y.M.C.A. is the most inclusive, comprehensive and democratic club in the city? Do you know it is about the livest, red bloodedest social center in the whole state of Minnesota? Do you know that as a member you are privileged to bowl, play billiards, pool, chess, checkers, handball, basketball, volleyball, indoor baseball, box, wrestle, take a bath, swim, go to a “movie”, skate on a roof garden, take an educational class in the “three R’s”, languages, advertising, commerce, business, traffic and transportation, join an automotive training group,- infact, enjoy cultural courses of almost any kind one needs in the ordinary relations of life including courses in religious instruction, All these are optional. A member may be as much or as little in the thick of it as his taste and time permits, but the more facets his interest shows, the better his membership is liked at the “Y”.
-Minneapolis Membership Campaign, 1919
Built at Ninth Street and Lasalle Avenue in 1919 the old, 12-story, Y.M.C.A building in downtown Minneapolis originally had a low-rise wing to the north which contained the swimming pool. The wing was demolished for the construction of LaSalle Plaza in 1989. The Gothic Revival tower was renovated as 121-unit apartment complex in 1994 and added National Register of Historic Places in 1995.
