On June 11th, a board of seven judges announced their decision to send 18 year old , blonde, Sylvia Brenner off to represent Minneapolis at the famous Atlantic City Beauty Pageant in New Jersey. Miss Brenner, who lived at 2736 Girard Avenue South, was chosen from a field of 100 City of Lakes beauties that entered the Minneapolis Daily Star contest. The elimination took over three hours. Msss Helen Douglas who was Miss Minneapolis in 1926, pinned the winning ribbon on Sylvia Brenner. The event was followed by an afternoon gala in the new Minneapolis Auditorium, MIss Minneapolis, 1927 was featured on stage with Norma Smallwood, Miss America, 1926. After the contest Miss Minneapolis said she preferred the term “Swimming Beauty” to “Bathing Beauty” because that’s what swim suits are for and when she swims, she swims, there is no bathing about it.
