University of Minnesota, home of the Golden Gophers, is one of the major educational institutions of the nation. The main campus, as shown in this view, is attractively situated on a wooded area high above the Mississippi River near the falls of St. Anthony.
Located at a bend in the Mississippi River in the hub of the Minneapolis & St. Paul metropolitan area, the University of Minnesota campus serves as the cultural and intellectual center of the state. The 200-acre campus with its tree-lined and predominantly Neo-classical architecture on the east bank of the river provides a scenic contrast to the largely industrial and commercial area which surrounds it. Some 30,000 students attend classes on the Minneapolis campus, which houses most of the professional schools and The University’s largest college, the college of liberal arts. Students at the University’s other campuses — St. Paul, Duluth, Morris and Rochester bring total enrollment to more than 35,000. In addition, more than 14,000 students attend evening classes conducted by the General Extension Division.
