Pioneer Hall has been haunting the campus between Fulton and Harvard Streets on the East Bank of the University of Minnesota for over 90 years. The Colonial Revival-style dormitory was built in two halves. Both sections contain small shady courtyards enclosed by brick walls on three sides. Short brick and stone parapet walls are accessed by students and fearless squirrels through round-arched passageways. The first half was constructed 1928. Another followed a few years later. The buildings were noted for their fine red brick exteriors, slate roofs, cupolas and round-arched first-floor windows. Pioneer Hall originally opened as an all-male dorm with room for about 700 students. The boys shared bathrooms. Chairs, desks and beds were provided.
