An old-world garden, with a replica of a Bavarian wayside inn, will be constructed at the intersection of Broadway and Marshall Streets. in Northeast Minneapolis. The garden, at the northwest corner of the St. Anthony renewal area, will be dedicated next month as Grain Belt Park and presented to the city by the Minneapolis Brewing Co. A fountain in the garden will be operated 24 hours a day, drawing its water from Minneapolis Brewing Co. wells. The fountain will be illuminated at night by underwater lighting, and the park itself will be lit by gas lamps. The 99-foot-long replica of the inn will have three timbered tables with decorative carvings. flanked by colored glass windows- The garden patio will be paved with cobblestones.
Frank Kiewel, president of Minneapolis Brewing. said the park is intended to draw attention to the restoration of the neighborhood’s historic character. The area south of the park contains buildings that date to St. Anthony’s founding in 1849. The park is adjacent to the brewery and across the street from the new Northeast State Bank. A new service station is being constructed by Shell Oil Co. on a third corner of the intersection. Approximately 1,300 properties are involved in the St. Anthony renewal project. scheduled to begin next year. The program will be carried out by the Minneapolis Housing and Redevelopment Authority.
