Winchell Trail

The Winchell Trail is a hiking route stretching five miles along the Minneapolis side of the Mississippi River. It extends between Franklin Avenue South and East 44th Street, offering a secluded experience for birdwatchers and nature enthusiasts. This rustic trail provides access to the Upper Mississippi River gorge, showcasing scenic views of sandy beaches, the Giggly Hills oak savanna restoration project, and a floodplain forest. The trail is exclusively for hikers, with some sections, including the stretch between East 38th and East 44th Streets, paved for easier navigation. The trail is rated moderate and suitable for hikers. The total elevation gain is 501 feet.

The Dakota people have lived along the Upper Mississippi River for centuries, and the Winchell Trail may trace routes they .originally established. The Winchell Trail can be accessed at multiple points along the West River Parkway. The northern trailhead is located near Franklin Avenue South, while the southern trailhead lies near East 44th Street. Additional entrances, like one at East 36th Street, lead hikers to key features like the oak savanna restoration area. Parking is available at crescent-shaped lots near East 36th Street and East 44th Street, and most access points include bicycle racks for those arriving by bike. However, bicycles are prohibited on the trail or any other natural surface paths in the gorge.
